The Best Off-Road and Trail Motorcycle Routes in Andalusia

Andalusia is Europe’s great playground for trail riders. Within a couple of hours of the Mediterranean you can ride through cork forests, climb to white villages hanging off cliffs, cross Spain’s highest mountains and end up in the only desert in Europe.

We’re Gas & FUN, local riders from Marbella. These are the areas we ride every week, and what makes each one special. We won’t hand you the tracks: half the magic is discovering them. But we’ll tell you where to point your front wheel.

1. The hidden Costa del Sol: tracks behind the beach

Five minutes from the coast, the tourist strip disappears. Dirt tracks climb into the hills behind Marbella with the sea glittering below and Africa on the horizon on a clear day. It’s the perfect first taste of trail riding.

2. Sierra Bermeja and the Genal Valley: red mountains, white villages

Sierra Bermeja’s red rock rises straight up from the coast. Behind it lies the Genal Valley: chestnut forests, tiny white villages and some of the quietest roads in southern Spain. Coast, mountain and village in a single day.

3. Ronda: the city on the cliff

Ronda sits on top of a gorge, and the ride there is half the point: forest tracks and twisting mountain roads. We stop to walk the old town before riding back.

4. Eastern Málaga: Montes de Málaga, Axarquía and Zafarraya

East of Málaga the land folds into steep hills of vineyards and almond trees, with whitewashed villages and the dramatic Zafarraya pass. Big views and great riding, much less known than the west.

5. Cádiz: cork forests and the Costa de la Luz

From Sotogrande into Los Alcornocales, one of the largest cork oak forests in the world, then out to the Atlantic: Vejer, Zahara, Barbate and the windswept beaches of Tarifa. A gentler ride, heavy on views.

6. Sierra de las Nieves: curves for road riders

Not everyone wants dirt. The roads between Marbella, Ronda and the Sierra de las Nieves are some of the best motorcycle roads in Spain: perfect tarmac, endless bends, almost no traffic.

7. Sierra Nevada and the deserts: Gorafe and Tabernas

The big one. From the Mediterranean up to the foot of the highest peak in mainland Spain, then down into two deserts: the badlands of Gorafe and Tabernas, where the spaghetti westerns were filmed. Five days, 70% off-road and a landscape that changes every hour.

When to go
